Jesus was opposed to religion because religion always puts principle over people. Religion will always sacrifice people on the altar of pious observance. It is true that many in the world of Christian faith have embraced religion over relationship, but there is a danger if we do not abandon religion in all its forms. One of the best examples of atheistic religion is the worship of the environment.
Michael Crichton, known for his books Jurassic Park, Sphere, State of Fear, Prey, and for creating the television series ER, argues that environmentalists are promoting their own brand of religion.
Today, one of the most powerful religions in the Western World is environmentalism. Environmentalism seems to be the religion of choice for urban atheists. Why do I say it’s a religion? Well, just look at the beliefs. If you look carefully, you see that environmentalism is in fact a perfect 21st century remapping of traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs and myths. There’s an initial Eden, a paradise, a state of grace and unity with nature, there’s a fall from grace into a state of pollution as a result of eating from the tree of knowledge, and as a result of our actions there is a judgment day coming for us all. We are all energy sinners, doomed to die, unless we seek salvation, which is now called sustainability. Sustainability is salvation in the church of the environment. Just as organic food is its communion, that pesticide-free wafer that the right people with the right beliefs, imbibe…
And so it is, sadly, with environmentalism. Increasingly it seems facts aren’t necessary, because the tenets of environmentalism are all about belief. It’s about whether you are going to be a sinner, or saved. Whether you are going to be one of the people on the side of salvation, or on the side of doom. Whether you are going to be one of us, or one of them.
You don’t have to look far before you discover the hypocrites of this newest religious movement. Al Gore has begun his own crusade to convert the masses to his religion of energy conservation and thus avoid the “day of judgment” known as “Global Warming.” And while he asks everyone to sacrifice for the sake of the environment, researchers have discovered that Al Gore does not find it necessary to follow his own laws.
Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.
The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average…
Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per
month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.
But Gore is not alone in his hypocrisy. Check out this story from Belgium on how Greenpeace is trying to promote the religion of conservation.
Greenpeace today unveiled a giant Ark in the centre of Brussels and urged Governments and the public to act to save the climate while there is still time. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assembled in Brussels this week, to agree and conclude its assessment of the impacts of climate change (the second of four major reports on climate change due from the IPCC in 2007), Greenpeace called for action to avert the catastrophic risks facing millions of people, species and ecosystems across the globe.
So let me get this straight… in order to protect the environment, Greenpeace killed a bunch of trees to build a boat that is supposed to remind us not to kill trees because that will destroy the environment. Can you say, “hypocrisy” in the name of religion?
Al Gore and Greenpeace can justify their hypocrisy because in the end what matters is their religion and not people. In the end, they do not care how many people suffer to serve their religious laws, laws which they themselves have no trouble breaking, and that becomes the source of danger.
In Luke chapter 6, we see the beginning of the conflict between Jesus and the religionists of his day. Their conflict started off innocent enough, but eventually in the name of religion these leaders were willing to conspire and kill Jesus. All religions destroy people. It starts small, but it always escalates and ends in human suffering. No matter what religion one follows; religion in the name of Jesus, religion in the name of Allah, religion in the name of America, or religion in the name of Nature, it will lead people down the path of misery. Jesus taught that we must put aside religion and embrace relationship. We must seek relationship with YHWH, the God who created us. We must seek to follow Jesus without compromise and without reserve.

I could not agree more.
