Late Saturday night I was sitting at home, helping my wife fold laundry and watching a movie called “The Terminal.” In this movie, Viktor Navorski, played by Tom Hanks, travels to the United States to fulfil his father’s dying wish. Upon arrival, Viktor finds that war in his homeland has left him unable to enter the United States. Forced to live in the airport, the movie follows Viktor’s journey to learn English, make friends, and eventually meet the love of his life… all while living at gate 67. As I watched Viktor, I was overwhelmed by how much satisfaction he found in the Airport… more than some people find in a lifetime of searching. The lesson I learned from Viktor is that life is not just waiting to happen, life is happening; right here, right now.
In stark contract, much of our daily life is rooted in consumerism. We travel from city to city and shop to shop in search of the best deals. We flip though 500 satellite channels in search of the show that will entertain our mood. We enjoy relationships of convenience that meet our most pressing needs and then move on to new ones when the urgencies of life demand. We buy a house in one city, work in another, go to church in a third, and find pleasure everywhere else. Our American experience has made us consumers of Choice, and we have ceased to experience the satisfaction that waits right outside our front door.
I moved here to Orting because I want to experience life in this community. Orting is where I want to raise my kids. Orting is where I want to build a church that will help transform lives. Life is waiting in Orting.
