A Divine Identity – Part 3

Reunion is a diverse group of people, united by the cross of Christ for the purpose of enjoying God and growing as a Family

Unity is the next hallmark of our Divine Identity in YHWH. Biblical Unity takes on the following elements.

1. We purpose to walk in the unity of our common salvation.

Ephesians 4:1-6 (HCSB) I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, accepting one another in love, diligently keeping the unity of the Spirit with the peace that binds us. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope at your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

Unity is not something we create by our own efforts. Unity does not come through the confession of a common creed or tradition.  Unity is not rooted in a denomination or in our “independence” from a denomination.  Unity does not come from skin color, sex, age, or life-experience.  Unity comes, first and foremost, by the indwelling/baptizing presence of the Divine-Spirit.    Only upon the foundation of the Spirit, can we build a Church that is strong in love and peace.

2. We purpose to maintain the unity of our faith.

Colossians 3:12-15 (HCSB) Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so also you must forgive. Above all, put on love—the perfect bond of unity. And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful.

Unity comes from the Spirit, but we must maintain that Divine-unity by living out the compassion and love of God.

Questions
  1. Do you know Jesus as Lord and Savior?
  2. How does unity from the Spirit look different from the kind of unity promoted by those who either promote or despise “denominations?”
  3. What is the fruit of Spirit-Unity?
  4. Read the passages above.  What actions must you take to foster true Divine-unity in your church?
