"I Kissed A Girl" Disappoints Christian Mom

My wife and I first heard the song “I Kissed a Girl” about a month or so ago when Katy Perry appeared on “So You Think You Can Dance.”  Normally we enjoy the show with our sons, because they love to jump and dance around, but this night I was glad we watched without them.  I sat in disbelief as Ms. Perry sang a celebration of her lesbian experimentation with a stranger whose name she did not even know.  The song’s lyrics celebrate her drunken loss of inhabitation and rebellion against what she knows is right.  Yet as provocative as the song is, the video is much more graphic in emphasizing the pleasures of lesbian sexuality.

I expect this kind of stuff from the World.  Songs celebrating headonistic and self-serving pleasure fill our airwaves and play on radio stations across America.  I did not originally see this song as anything worthy of note and did not bother to write anything about it. However, thanks to Kevin Bussey, I found out that Katy Perry is not just your average singer. She comes from a Christian family, has professed faith in Jesus Christ and even had a hit Gospel album in 2001.

Her current song, now a great departure from what she used to celebrate, is a huge hit around the world. Ms. Perry’s choice to rebel against Jesus has not only had a negative impact on young women, it has also hurt her Christian parents and that makes this story worthy of mention. According to the Christian Post:

The evangelical Christian parents of U.S. chart topper Katy Perry have lashed out against the lyrics of their daughter’s No. 1 hit single “I Kissed A Girl.”

Her parents are outraged by the song’s provocative lyrics, which include “I kissed a girl and I liked it.”

Perry’s mother, Mary Hudson, says she is disappointed at the career path her daughter has decided to go down.

“I hate the song,” she said, according to the Daily Record. “It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting. Katy knows how I feel. We are a very outspoken family.”

“I can’t even listen to that song,” the mother added. “The first time I heard it I was in total shock. When it comes on the radio I bow my head and pray.”

Yet in the midst of their shock and pain at seeing their child rebel against God, they are still demonstrating love.

“Katy is our daughter and we love her but we strongly disagree with how she is conducting herself at the moment,” Mary Hudson said.

“We cannot cut her out of our lives as she is our child – but she knows we disagree strongly with what she is doing and the message she is promoting regarding homosexuality which the Bible clearly states is a sin.

“But the Bible also promotes understanding and forgiveness, which I keep reminding myself.”

Hudson said, meanwhile, that Perry’s father has “had words” with her over her skimpy 50s-inspired outfits.

“Some are too revealing and her father has had words with her about it. Like any child she is going through a period of rebellion.”

In talking about this story, my wife I take away two important lessons.

First, the tragedy of this story is not the promotion of homosexuality alone. I see in this story an example of what can happen to anyone who flirts with the corruptive influences of our World.  Ms. Perry is not evil, at least not any more than you or I.  In fact, she is a self-proclaimed follower of Jesus who has lost her way and, if not careful, any one of us can fall into the same sin.
Proverbs 6:16-29
There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:

Haughty eyes,

a lying tongue,

And hands that shed innocent blood,

A heart that devises wicked plans,

Feet that run rapidly to evil,

A false witness who utters lies,

And one who spreads strife among brothers.

My son, observe the commandment of your father And do not forsake the teaching of your mother; Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; When you sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you. For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life

To keep you from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the adulteress. Do not desire her beauty in your heart, Nor let her capture you with her eyelids. For on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread, And an adulteress hunts for the precious life. Can a man take fire in his bosom And his clothes not be burned? Or can a man walk on hot coals And his feet not be scorched?

Second, we must not forget, that God cares not just about our emotions, but He also cares for how we use our bodies.  We, as Christians, live for a future when we will be resurrected to new life, but how we live now has value to God.  The Apostle Paul puts it this way.

1 Corinthians 15:32-34 If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.

Pray for Ms. Perry’s family and anyone you know who has a child in rebellion.  The Father loves these lost kids and wants them to return from their prodigal ways.

Pray for this young woman that she will repent, but also take note of your own life. What compromises have you made that seem small now, but could lead to great tragedy if not held in check by the Spirit of God?

Yes, I will commit to praying for Kate Perry. My heart has been breaking for her family ever since I read the article. The mere thought of raising a child in the ways of God and then having to watch them make poor choices must be devastating. I will pray that God will bring her back to Him and use her talent to glorify Christ and not man!

I know how you feel about promoting homosexuality. I wish the libral media would stop promoting sinful things mixed fabrics, shellfish, and not stoning adulterers. Talk about harmful to young women of America!

I kinda wish my wife would kiss a girl, tho, if she let me watch.

For those unaware, Angry Xtian is an Atheist who pretends to be a Christian and hosts a site which posts many rude, ignorant, and false comments while pretending to be a follower of Jesus. Angry Xtian, is posting here because he/she is angry that I exposed his/her lies on the site. Angry Xtian’s post here is an example of the foolish stuff I am speaking about.

Thanks Angry Xtian for exposing your true intentions and heart here on my site. I pray someday you find hope and peace in Jesus Christ.

I think, Joe, that whether or not this is worthy of argument depends on where one stands on the homosexuality issue. For that, I think you and I might have to agree to disagree.

However, I understand the controversy, especially considering her background, and I’m sure it is frustrating for some people to see this change.

I have read reports that her parents are supportive of her secular career, even if they disagree with the subject matter of some of her songs, and for that I am thankful. I do pray Katy finds peace in her walk with Jesus, whatever that might mean for her.

Hi Eron, thanks for the conversation on your blog and for your thoughts. I suppose you are right, we will have to agree to disagree and allow God to be the ultimate persuader.
