I was excited last week to learn that my book proposal was selected by Tyndale Publishers and the Fedd Agency as one of the top 10 submissions for their upcoming RE:WRITE conference here in San Diego. I don’t know… maybe they only had 11 submissions, but I am still happy to make their top selection of writers.
If you are attending, look me up while you are there.
Congratulations as well to all the other finalists (Listed in no particular order.)
“Epic Grace”by Kurt Bubna
“Gospel Grub”by Cheryl Porter and Bethane Banks
“Healing Prayers for a Hurting World”by Deb Nykyforchyn
Mansfield approaches this topic with directness and sensitivity recognizing that an estimated 37% of the US population avoids church because of past hurts (pg. x).
I like Mansfiend’s story of a young boy with his arm stuck in the vending machine. Crying and bleeding, the boy begs for help, when all along, the boy was clutching onto a candy bar that kept his arm pinned inside. Once he let go of the bar, his arm was set free. Mansfiend likens this experience to the many people who have left the church, but continue to hold onto the “candy bar” of hurt and anger. Only when we chose to let go, will the healing process begin.
Each chapter of the book offers encouragement to pursue healing with heartfelt word of encouragement:
Adversity endured righteously has the power to lift a man to new heights.
Nothing can keep my soul in bondage except the forbidden or unclean thing I insist on holding tight.
When we think we are loving Jesus but hating his people, we are actually loving Jesus so little that his people don’t matter anymore.
Enduring the wounds of fellow Christians with mercy and grace seems to be the call of every true saint. We should not expect it to be any different in our own lives.
As you play your bitter story over again in your mind, you keep hardening your feelings and deepening the woud.
It is time to make a change. And the change begins with forgiving.
In my own life, I have experienced hurts from the church and I have had to forgive and allow God to restore true fellowship with my fellow saints. I can say from experience, there is hope beyond hurt and if you are suffering now, reading this book is a great first step toward restoration.

Over the past 40 days I have been reading multiple entries each day so I could get a real feel for the content. Each day begins with a short passage of scripture and falls into one of seven categories: Core, Family, Friends, Potential, Mission, Influence, and Faith. Overall, I am really pleased. The insights into Coach Dungy’s life and how he achieved success coaching the Indianapolis Colts are very inspiring. I have followed Dungy’s career for a long time and reading more about what motivates him to succeed is a real treat. One of my favorite passages comes on Day 4 of this 365 day devotional where Dungy challenges readers to s create incremental goals.
My goals are usually qualitative, not quantitative. When I coached, my aim each season was not to win a certain number of games, but to have a team that played as well as it could and that was an asset to its community. I measured the team by whether it played up to its potential. And from year to year, I measured it by whether it improved.
That’s also how I measure myself. When I was a young assistant, I wanted to learn enough to one day be considered for a coordinator position. Then as a coordinator, I wanted to learn and improve so I could become a head coach. Sometimes our goals are a steady step-by-step progression, and sometimes they require risk.
I find Dungy’s advise both helpful and challenging to the way I lead. I am excited to keep reading and learn a little bit more each day. The video below shares a bit more from Coach Dungy himself.
I give the book 4 out of 5 stars only because I find a few of the entries lack any significant insight, but in a book this massive everyone will have their own favorites. Still, the book is overall worth the time and money and I encourage all my readers to pick up a copy and make this a part of their daily inspirational reading for the next year.
