Sacrificing Babies To The Gods of Global Warming

December 12th, 2007

Without a doubt, we are the most advanced people to live on the earth. Our great Universities teach the most sophisticated knowledge, our technology has enabled us to conquer space, and our medical achievements are without historical peer. There is only one problem; I am starting to have some doubts.

For thousands upon thousands of years, religionists in “inferior” cultures have sacrificed human life to appease their gods. The Ugaritic texts depict the Canaanite deity Baal as a great storm god with the power of thunder and lightning in his hands. The “Prince Lord of the Earth” who sat upon Mt. Zaphon waiting for the men and women of earth to sacrifice their babies; for only with the death of human life would Baal then bring fertility to the land. Now in our age of great farming technology, we know that Baal does not determine the success of our crops and certainly we don’t need to kill babies to guarantee a good harvest. We are far too advanced to buy into that sort of religious bunk. Right?

Fast forward many thousands of years to North America where many of the native cultures practiced human sacrifice as a form of worship to appease their god’s and bring healing to the land. Human sacrifice remained an official part of Peruvian cultures until about 500 years ago when the Spanish conquered and abolished the barbarian practice. On further review, maybe it was only suppressed. Consider this recent AP news story from February 2004.

“Peruvian police investigate possible infant sacrifice to earth god”

A decapitated baby boy found on a hilltop near Lake Titicaca may have been the victim of a centuries-old human sacrifice ritual meant to appease a pre-Columbian earth god, police said Wednesday. The remains of the infant, believed to have been seven months old, were discovered Tuesday on a peninsula in the Yunguyo region near the Bolivian border…

Peruvian anthropologist Juan Ossio said that human sacrifices date back to the Chavin culture, which flourished in Peru between 900-200 BC… “Sacrifices were made for more than a thousand year and it is hard to get rid of deeply rooted beliefs.” Anthropologists occasionally encounter reports of human sacrifices while conducting research in Peru, although it is more common to hear about old people being buried alive in an effort to appease the earthen gods, Ossio said.

Who knew? Jack Kevorkian may have a second career as an environmental activist who kills the elderly to save the planet, but that is another story for the future.

Indeed, the idea of killing babies to appease the Earth may be a deeper reality than we have thought possible. Consider the actions of Toni Vernelli who, in an effort to save the world from Global warming, killed her unborn child through a legal abortion.

“Had Toni Vernelli gone ahead with her pregnancy ten years ago, she would know at first hand what it is like to cradle her own baby, to have a pair of innocent eyes gazing up at her with unconditional love, to feel a little hand slipping into hers – and a voice calling her Mummy.

But the very thought makes her shudder with horror. Because when Toni terminated her pregnancy, she did so in the firm belief she was helping to save the planet.

At the age of 27 this young woman at the height of her reproductive years was sterilised to “protect the planet”.Incredibly, instead of mourning the loss of a family that never was, her boyfriend (now husband) presented her with a congratulations card. While some might think it strange to celebrate the reversal of nature and denial of motherhood, Toni relishes her decision with an almost religious zeal.

“Having children is selfish. It’s all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet,” says Toni, 35.

“Every person who is born uses more food, more water, more land, more fossil fuels, more trees and produces more rubbish, more pollution, more greenhouse gases, and adds to the problem of over-population.”

For this radical new religion served by the “Imps of Science,” humans are the enemy of Nature and it only seems right that we should sacrifice our babies to appease the wrath of Mother Earth. Kathleen Parker, Columnist for the Washington Post Writers group laments,

Although I doubt there are many willing to sterilize themselves in order to reduce the size of their carbon footprint, such extreme materialism is the evolutionary product of our gradual commodification of human life.

Suddenly, the unborn are of no greater importance than the contents of our recycling bin. Like Weight Watchers dieters substituting carbs for sugars, we trade off future members of the human race to neutralize insults to Earth’s present balance.

Is this the slippery slope that pro-lifers prophesied? Once such utilitarian concerns edge out our humanity – and once human life is deemed to have no greater value than any other life form – how long before we begin tidying up other inconveniences?

It just may be that we are at the top of the cliff because Toni is not alone in her fervor to eliminate the plague of humans that infest our earth. Diana Hull, president of Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS) says,

“Human overpopulation is the fundamental environmental problem. Excessive greenhouse gases—like loss of open space, like traffic congestion, like never-ending sprawl—are one of the symptoms. Habitat loss due to population growth is the greatest threat to wildlife, a far greater threat than global warming.”

Writing in the Medical Journal of Australia Barry Walters, an associate professor of obstetric medicine at the University of Western Australia,

…is making that case. Dr Walters says every family choosing to have more than a defined number of children should be charged a carbon tax. He goes on to argue that those purchasing condoms or undergoing sterilisation procedures should be awarded carbon credits. The proposal is backed by Garry Egger, an adjunct professor of health sciences at Southern Cross University in New South Wales.

John Guillebaud, co-chairman of OPT and emeritus professor of family planning at University College London, said:

“The effect on the planet of having one child less is an order of magnitude greater than all these other things we might do, such as switching off lights. “The greatest thing anyone in Britain could do to help the future of the planet would be to have one less child.”

In 1968, Dr. Paul R. Ehrlich wrote a book entitled “The Population Bomb” in which he recommends forced sterilization and abortion as tools for controlling the population of humans that are destroying the ecosystem. And not to be outdone, the London Telegraph reports that some scientits are now suggesting that our study of the heavens is destroying the Universe… seriously, I am not kidding.

It will not be long before women who get abortions will also be seen as heroes and defenders of the nature religion. Certainly many thousands of years have passed since the first baby was sacrificed to Baal, but maybe we have not advanced all that much. Al Gore presides as the High Priest of the new Global Warming religion, and it will not be long before his acolytes, driven by his fear mongering, will begin to embrace the cultis of human sacrifice for the sake of appeasing the angry gods of the Environment.

Be warned. The answer does not lie in politics, laws, or religion. The only hope to save people and preserve our planet is to embrace an alternative rooted in the Creation story of YHWH and the salvation news of Jesus Christ. Otherwise, it will not be long before we are sacrificing babies to the gods of Global Warming.

Meet the Metrospiritual

September 26th, 2007
I was in a round-table discussion with some church planters today, and my friend, and fellow church planter, Jason Douros was talking about the need to plant more churches in the metro-Seattle area. As he talked about the unique needs of his community, I found in Jason’s words some surprising similarities to the spiritual needs in my own sub-urban/rural community of Orting, Washington.

So here I am, planting a church in one of the most unchurched parts of the United States, yet every day I am meeting people who are very “spiritual.” I think the trend we are seeing take shape in the large metropolitan communities of our nation can best be described as the emergence of “Metrospirituality.”

Who are the Metrospiritual?

The Metrospirituals in the Pacific Northwest come in two forms: Organic-Metrospirituals and Christian-Metrospirituals. Sites like Belief.Net have made a good case for what I am calling the Organic kind.

Organic-Metrospirituality is the “mainstreaming of Taoist, Buddhist (thanks to Richard Gere and Uma’s dad, Buddhism scholar and practitioner Robert Thurman), and Hindu values, among others, into an easily digestible, buyable form.” In Seattle, it is the rejection of any organized religion coupled with the desire to be spiritual by communing with nature (thus the name Organic) that creates the uniqe breed of Metrospiritual here in the Puget Sound region. I think I will leave it to Jason to explore this in more depth on his blog now titled “Metrospirituality.”

Christian-Metrospirituality is where I want to focus my attention because these are the kind os people I am meeting in my own community near Seatle. Unlike the Organic-Metrospiritual, the Christian-Metrospiritual has embraced all the trappings of Western-industrialized religion, along with the acceptance of our consumer culture, and syncretized them with a sturdy Christian veneer.

In my upcoming posts, I will give more specific definitions of trends and people I see in my own community here in the Pacific Northwest. Until then, I am open to some of your own input or stories of both the Organic- and the Christian-Metrospiritual.

Living Outside Depression

June 21st, 2007

In the recent weeks, I have come across a lot of folks who are struggling with depression. A quick survey of the stats will tell you that Western Washington is full of depressed people. Since moving here almost 10 years ago, I have heard lots of reasons for this depression; the rain, the clouds, or the short winter days. Personally, I think the weather men, and women, are some of the most depression-inducing people on the planet, but that is another post for another time.

While no one should dismiss the reality of a truly clinical illness, I think for many there is a deeper issue that cannot be solved with drugs. The reason so many struggle with depression is that they have failed to recognize the existence of two worlds. Too many people expect this physical world to fulfill every desire. Yet this world is not perfect and it does fall short. When pleasures elude and pains intrude, it is easy to withdraw and let depression take control. The hope for all those lost in a battle against depression, sorrow, grief and despair lies in discovering another world; the world of God, which exists both in and outside of our own reality. James, the brother of Jesus, puts it this way:

Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. An indecisive man is unstable in all his ways. The brother of humble circumstances should boast in his exaltation; but the one who is rich ⌊should boast⌋ in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a flower of the field. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and dries up the grass; its flower falls off, and its beautiful appearance is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will wither away while pursuing his activities. Blessed is a man who endures trials, because when he passes the test he will receive the crown of life that He has promised to those who love Him.

No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God.” For God is not tempted by evil, and He Himself doesn’t tempt anyone. But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. Don’t be deceived, my dearly loved brothers. Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning. By His own choice, He gave us a new birth by the message of truth so that we would be the firstfruits of His creatures.

The eyes of this world only see trials as a sign that we are alone and lost without hope. But the eyes of the other world see trials as a cause for joy. Are you troubled by life? Depressed? Alone? Weary? Maybe you need to look outside yourself, outside this world, and look to the Heavens for your salvation?

Conversations On The Crapper

June 1st, 2007

I was recently at a conference and during the break I went into the bathroom. Upon entering, I heard a man talking in one of the stalls. At first I thought maybe he was helping his kid. I was soon flushed with embarrassment when I realized there was only one voice talking. “Maybe the bathroom talker was crazy?” Nope. It turns out that he was on his cell phone. Apparently this guy was such an important person, that he could not even spare a few minutes to sit and ponder life’s great issues. Since that time, I have come across at least three other men working their flapper on the potty. It really bowled me over to discover so many people talk on the phone while using the john.

How important can any one person be that they must have their conversations on the crapper?

Maybe the guy was a brain surgeon helping guide his colleague through an intricate procedure to transplant a brain?

Could it be that he was on the line with the President trying to talk him out of dumping a load of nuclear bombs on Iran?

Maybe he was helping his mom bake a loaf and she needed instructions on how to work the oven?

Maybe the IRS was auditing the guy’s assets, and this was his last chance to talk with his accountant?

Come to think of it… nobody is so important that they cannot put a lid on it for a few minutes of private time in the water closet. I can’t imagine Thomas Crapper* or Alexander Bell thought their commodious inventions would lead to such ends. Do people really feel so overwhelmed in life that they must have conversations on the crapper?

I won’t plunge any further into this topic, so allow me close with this suggestion. If someone gives you a ring on the toilet, please remember two things. First, very few things in life are so urgent that you need to interrupt your bathroom business. Second, please wash your phone before you let someone borrow your phone.

* Yes I know the “crapper” was invented by Sir John Harrington and only marketed by Thomas Crapper.
