A Parable of Political Compassion

September 3rd, 2009

As our nation bickers over the right political solution to the problems facing the American healthcare system, I think ww are loosing sight of the real meaning of compassion.  The following parable illustrates this well.

A Crowd gathered around the broken form of a Young Man who was lying motionless on the roadside  Moments before the Young Man was riding his bike down the street, when suddenly struck by a car.  Dazed and confused, the Crowd looked around for someone to offer direction on what they should do.
.
A Doctor came to the scene.  He quickly ran to the Young Man’s side, bent down and began searching through his pockets.  When the Doctor could not find an insurance card, he quietly moved away and said, “I cannot help this man.”
.
As the crowd became angry, a successful trial Lawyer came to the scene.  Upon seeing the man bleeding to death, and hearing the story of the Doctor who refused to help, the Lawyer became angry.  She decried this great injustice saying, “no one in America shouod be refused medical care just because he cannot pay.”  The Lawyer quickly bent down beside the Young Man bleeding on the ground.  She put her business card in the man’s pocket and said, “when you get well, come and see me.  I will be sure to represent you in a big-money lawsuit against that Doctor, the Hospital, and the Insurance companies.”
.
Growing more angry, the Crowd began to grumble and complain, “what is wrong with this country!?”
.
A wealthy US Senator whose office was close to the scene came into the crowd.  Seeing the Young Man bleeding to death on the ground, he cried out, “why has no one helped this man?!”  The crowd reported the story of the Doctor and the Lawyer.  The Senator knew something must be done quickly to save this man’s life.  He jumped into action. He climbed onto a nearby soapbox and gave an impassioned speech to the enraged Crowd.  ”We need change!  We must pass a law to help this man who does not have healthcare!  There are many Rich People in this country who have enough money to help this man get care.  Come with me and we will pass a Law that will force these Rich People and Big Companies to pay for this man’s healthcare!”
.
The crowds loved the words of compassion spoken by the wealthy-Senator, made signs in support of his speech and followed after him to help pass a Law.
.
Before the Crowds could leave, a well-known Pastor jumped into the middle of the ruckus and decried to the immorality of the Senator’s proposed Law.  The Pastor used his great influence and spoke passionately from the Bible to rally a counter-protest against the Senator and his Law.
.
The TV cameras soon arrived to film the scene.  The nicely-dressed Anchorwoman knelt gently beside the injured man.  She held a microphone to the injured man’s mouth and asked for a statement decrying the evils of the American healthcare system.  Unable to speak or sign a press release, the Anchorwoman moved on to interview the Senator, the Doctor, the Pastor and people in the Crowd.
.
The Crowds passed by chanting their support for their chosen cause.  The cameras followed.  The young man was left alone, bleeding to death on the roadside.
.
An Elderly Man came to the scene.  He bent down, and forced his aging fingers to bandage the wounds.  The Elderly Man had no money of his own so he sold his car to help pay for the young man’s medical care.”

Which of these people; the Doctor, the Lawyer, the Senator, the Pastor, the Crowds or the Elderly-Man reflect true compassion?

Which of these people offered a real solution to the dying man?

Which of these people are you?

The Parable of The Saint Who Divorced The Church

February 26th, 2009
Many saints are angry and bitter at the church.  Their relationship is much like the man who seeks a divorce from his wife in search of a better woman.

Jim’s marriage was in trouble.  He walked into the counselor’s office hoping for some support for the way he felt.

“What brings you here today”" asked Dr. Noble.

Jim looked down, refusing eye contact with Dr. Noble, as he began to answer, “My wife has changed from when we first married–she has so many more  wrinkles on her face.”

“Jim,” Dr. Noble interrupted, “do you think your wife has always had some of these wrinkles and flaws, and maybe you are just now beginning to notice them?”

“No, it is my wife showing signs of aging.  She no longer has the smooth and perfect skin I fell in love with.”  Jim realized how this sounded to the counselor, but he felt he had to finish telling his side of the story.  ”My wife has also put on some weight.  When we first fell in love, she was thin and athletic.  Now, I look at her with disgust.  I can’t even bear to touch her anymore.”

Dr. Noble had heard this kind of thing before from other men and women who had grown tired of their marriage.  He knew this was really the beginning of the end for Jim ad his wife.

“But don’t get me wrong, the problems are not just physical.”  Jim continued before Dr. Noble could interrupt.  ”My wife has said and done some things that I just cannot forgive.  She is not the same person I married.”

“Every marriage has troubles, Jim”  Dr. Noble affirmed, “but there is a healthy way to address these problems and a destructive way.  What have you done to make things better?”

“A lot!” said Jim, feeling vindicated by how hard he has worked to fix his wife.  ”I have offered my wife money so she could get some plastic surgery and be the woman I want her to be.   I also write her notes on a regular basis that remind her of all the things she does wrong during the week and how she can make herself  a better wife.”  Jim now looked up to meet Dr. Noble’s gaze with confidence in all that he had done.  ”I have done everything I can to make my wife better, but she is too slow to change.  It is time to move on.”

“What do you mean?”  Dr. Noble asked… but he already knew the answer.

“The only think left of our marriage is a piece of paper.  All that I have left is a meaningless institution that lacks the love and passion I long for.”  Ken was now more determined than ever to finish what he started.  ”I want to leave my marriage and start over with a new and better wife.  I want a wife who will not blemish with age, who will never do anything that upsets me, and one who will always meet my needs.  I know this is God’s plan for marriage, and I refuse to settle for anything less than God’s perfect design.”

Parable of the American Kingdom

October 2nd, 2008

Jesus, the undocumented worker, returned home to Mexico from living in America. His family said to him, “Jesus, why have you returned home from America?”

it is difficult to understand” he said, “so let me tell you a story.
The kingdom of America may be compared to a Government who wished to settle accounts with a Mortgage Lender.

When the Government had begun to settle accounts, one Mortgage Lender ,which owed 700 Billion dollars, was brought to account. But since the Mortgage Lender did not have the means to pay his bad debts, the Government simply printed up more money and gave it to the Mortgage Lender so he would not be ruined.

Later, that same Mortgage Lender, now bailed out from his 700 Billion in bad debts, went out and found a homeowner who owed hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Mortgage Lender seized the homeowner and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ So the homeowner fell to the ground and began to plead with the Mortgage Lender, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’ But the Mortgage Lender wanted his money and he took the homeowner’s property and forced him into bankruptcy.

So when his fellow homeowners saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their Government all that had happened.

Then summoning the Mortgage Lender, the Government said to him, ‘You wicked Mortgage Lender, I gave you 700 Billion to pay all your bad debt, should you not also have had mercy on the homeowners, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’ And the Mortgage Lender contributed many thousands of dollars into the coffers of the Government and contributed to the campaign funds of the many politicians and the Government was happy.

The homeowners were grieved, but still they elected the same leaders again and again…”

The Parable of The Runner and His Team

August 20th, 2008

I am convinced that the greatest illustrations about life come from ESPN and sports in general.  Today I offer you the story of Ben Coleman who used his passion to run as part of a team to overcome his Cerebral Palsy.

This video is a parable of the church and I am man enough to admit that I cry every time I watch it.
.
Like the teams that would not let Ben run, there are churches who fear to embrace those who are weak and reject those who do not fit within their demographic ideals.  Other churches are like the team that let Ben run; they embrace the weak, help the hurting and offer a place to belong.
- Is your church satisfied to let you be the water-boy, or do they let you run?
- Is your church more like the team that accepted Ben or like the many who rejected him?
- When you fall on the rugged path, who is there to pick you up?
- As you run toward the prize, are you surrounded by stronger runners who encourage you along?
- When your race comes to an end, what will you remember the most about your team (church)?
- How does this parable inspire your dream for being the church?
